- Topical anesthesia is applied.
- While patients’ eyes are protected with a safety shield, pulses are delivered to determine patient tolerance. This may create a hot snapping sensation as the light is pulsed.
- Treatment will last anywhere from a few minutes to a half hour depending on the surface of the area receiving treatment.
- Following the treatment, redness, warmth, and a slight burning sensation may occur. These symptoms should dissipate within two to four hours after the procedure.

If you do not see your particular concern addressed below, please contact one of our medical professionals who will happily answer any of your questions.
Broadband Light (BBL) is most commonly used to treat red spots, age spots, sun damage, port wine stains, hyper pigmentation, freckles, rosacea, angioma, and acne.
On the day of the procedure, a doctor will use a BBL module to administer light pulses to the problem skin area. He or she will test different wavelengths to determine which one is the best for you. You may feel a slight elastic band snapping sensation on your skin during this part of the procedure. The process will take between 15 to 45 minutes, after which the doctor will advise you on how to best care for your skin in the following days.
After the procedure, you are advised to apply sunscreen every time you leave the house and use any topical or oral medication prescribed.
Two to five treatments are best, administered at intervals of four to six weeks.
Patients who have received The Photofacial BBL treatments for sun damage, age spots, rosacea or redness have reported the sensation as similar to having a rubber band snapped against their skin. While this may cause mild discomfort, it should not be inordinately painful. A local anesthesia can be applied to make sure the procedure is totally pain-free.
