Micro Needling Procedure

Initially, micro needling became famous for being a simple, safe, effective and minimally invasive skin rejuvenation treatment. But now it is being used to treat other skin conditions such as acne scars, wrinkles, stretch marks, sun damaged skin, hyperpigmentation and alopecia.

The micro needling process involves the use of tiny surgical steel needles to create micro channels or holes to the skin. The idea of micro needling is based on the skin’s natural ability to repair itself whenever it experiences any type of physical damage. This can be cuts, burns and other abrasions. Because of this, the micro punctures will then trigger the healing process, thereby producing new collagen, elastin and capillaries. When this happens, your body will reuse the damaged collagen and elastin fibers to produce new ones, creating a thicker dermis. It is important to note that while micro needling does create injuries in the skin, they are by no means serious nor will it lead to permanent scarring. Instead, the result is a smoother, firmer and youthful skin.

While this procedure is relatively simple, it is still important for it to be performed by only professional and experienced medical practitioners or aestheticians at a clinic. You may think that it is better to do it yourself, but professionals understand how to properly and evenly treat your skin. They also have access to the most advanced tools and equipment that have better performance and safety specifications. At LaserBody M.D. for example, we only use the state-of-the-art Rejuvapen applicator, which delivers predictable and safe healing experiences. Another important advantage of this device is that it uses disposable surgical needles. The needles must be disposed of after each use in order to prevent infections as well as ensure that there are no diseases spread between patients.

Depending on the patient’s skin condition, the procedure can last from 30 minutes to an hour. For those with bigger skin areas to treat or more severe skin conditions, it may take longer because the doctor or aesthetician has to meticulously treat all areas evenly. Patients may receive topical anesthesia an hour before the procedure so that they have a painless experience. But most of the time, there is no need for this because the latest technologies make the process as pain-free as possible. In the case of the Rejuvapen, patients only feel a sandpaper sensation because the needle is positioned vertically and moves rapidly in an up and down motion. This minimizes the pain significantly.

It is amazing to know that the microscopic wounds stimulate new collagen deposition that may last up to a year, yet somehow they close within less than an hour without causing any bruising or injury. This is why there is no downtime required after a micro needling session. The skin will simply look pink for the first few days, and in some cases even less than 24 hours. It really depends on how superficial or deep the treatment was.

Targeted Areas of Micro needling

Contrary to popular belief, micro needling is not just for the face. It can also treat nearly all parts of the body. However, the most frequently targeted areas are the following:

  • Face
  • Neck
  • Arms
  • Décolletage
  • Abdomen
  • Thighs

All these are popular treatment areas because this is where people are more likely to develop poor skin elasticity and more stretch marks.

When it comes to the face, microneedling can be used to treat and improve conditions like acne scarring, wrinkles, loose skin, age and/or brown spots, stretch marks, large pores, reduced skin elasticity, uneven skin tone and pigment issues. The most common locations on the face are the forehead and around the eyes and mouth. The reason for this is because these are the areas that really show signs of aging.

Unlike derma rollers, the Rejuvapen allows you to adjust the needle depth so that you can tailor it to the patient’s condition. This is also useful for treating delicate areas, such as the skin under the eyes, which will require shorter needles. Another advantage is that the pen is more maneuverable, thereby letting the doctor or aesthetician treat virtually any area on the body. This includes tight curved areas like the nose that would otherwise be impossible to treat with the derma rollers.

With micro needling, you can expect to see significant improvement in just one to two weeks because it promotes natural collagen and elastin. As the new skin cells come to the surface, you will notice that your skin is smoother, tighter, and healthier.
